More About Us

Who We Are

Shara Coffee's mission is to become a Coffee producer that is socially conscious, environmentally responsible and to bring fair price to the farmer.

What we intend to do differently

Ethiopia, specifically, Yirgacheffe is the Bordeaux of the coffee growing world. Mother Nature has blessed it with the perfect variety, altitude, soil composition, level of precipitation, and sunshine to grow the best coffee in the world. Unfortunately, the industry has failed in preserving this nature given gift and bring it for the world to enjoy while making coffee farming a livable pursuit for the farmers.

When we set out to start shara Coffee, we understood that if we want to do our part in changing the farmers’ life standard, we would have to drastically change how we work both with the farmers and our clients(Roasters)

At the Farm

If we want farmers to bring us quality Cherry consistently, our relationship with them has to be more than transactional. We have to build relationship that would put the farmer at the center. We have to be at the farm a lot more frequently, bringing in expert consultation and incentivizing every effort the farmer makes to increase quality. Here in Ethiopia, most of the quality lost at the farm level happens during the harvest season. If farmers are getting paid the same for every pound of cherry they bring in, they have no incentive to be more selective in their picking. Unlike others, Shara Coffee will pay based on cherry ripeness, and we will be as transparent as possible to how we pay our farmers.

At Processing Stage

Natural and Washed are the two traditional processing methods that have been passed through generations across Ethiopia. However, we have to explore beyond tradition if we want to consistently produce excellent specialty grade coffee. We have to complement what we know with the latest and the best processing techniques from around the world. We believe we will be able to achieve our goal of producing exceptional micro lots.

Collaborating with Roasters

We believe this is something we should emulate, and We intend to directly work with roasters around the world and customize our services to their specific orders. We know Ethiopia can feel a little far for north Americans, however, our presence in DC, Maryland, & Virginia area should provide us ample opportunity to work with you
